SUMMARY:Troop 870 Merit Badge Counselor Info/Training
DESCRIPTION:Merit badges are at the core of the scouting method\, in addition to the other ways our scouts learn and earn advancement. Scouts advance their knowledge and skills\, learn possible new hobbies and expand their life experience through the process of earning them.\nAs we have many new parents and a number of new merit badge counselors\, the Adult Leaders invite you to come listen to a more in depth conversation of how merit badges are started and counseled with the troop; learn the process to teach them; and also ask that if you have unique skills that fit one of the many 135+ merit badges\, that you consider signing up as a merit badge counselor yourself. The troop offering is only as good as the scouts and parents make it\, so if you can help enrich the youth experience\, please do.\nMr. Baxter\n

SUMMARY:Beginner Backpacking - The Main Event
DESCRIPTION:Drop off Location: Murray Hills Christian Church- 3PM\nPickup Location: Parking lot Between McDonald's and Rite Aid\, 17555 SW Farmington Road. Return Sunday\, June 22 approx 2PM \nCost: TBD\, Estimated $30-50 for gas & food\nBe Prepared - Participation in these two meeting is required to participate in the backpacking trip. We will meet before the troop meetings at 6pm on June 9 & 16 at MHCC.\nIn advance of this trip\, we need to check your gear and do some training\, so come to the two "Be Prepared" sessions. If you are unable to attend them\, contact us. Nobody should come to The Main Event without the Be Prepared sessions unless they talk to us in advance and get special permission. This is a safety issue. You need to Be Prepared for backpacking.\n\nA thorough gear list can be found at:\n https://www.rei.com/learn/expert-advice/ultralight-backpacking-checklist.html\nThis is a general list and contains items that will not be needed for this trip (e.g. ice axe). Some items will be needed in the group but not everyone needs their own (e.g. camp stoves). At a minimum\, everyone needs a backpack that can comfortably fit all their gear\, sleeping bag & pad\, weather-appropriate clothing\, hygiene supplies\, water bottle\, good shoes/boots\, and room to carry food. Tents can/should be shared by 2-3 people\, subject to the usual Youth Protection rules. Find a buddy or two! Start gathering your gear\, and borrowing from friends as needed!\n\n June 9 6PM - Session #1 - initial gear check and a short hike\nBring the relevant gear you already have\, and we'll go over it and discuss the more detailed gear list and determine what's missing. Be ready for a short hike.\n\n June 16 6PM - Session #2 - final gear check and a short hike\nPack all the gear you will be taking to the Main Event\, and bring it for a final check. Be ready for a short hike carrying all your gear.\n\nThe Main Event - June 20-22\n\nWe plan to drive to a trailhead\, then hike a few miles away before making camp on Friday night. On Saturday\, we will hike to another location and make camp\, and then hike out on Sunday morning for a total of around 10 miles of hiking. The specific trail will be selected closer to departure based on trail conditions and the weather forecast. Since this is backpacking\, you will need to be able to carry all of your own gear on your back.\n\nFor any questions\, please reach out to Mr. Rempel and/or Mrs. Liedtke\, as they are leading this adventure.\n

SUMMARY:Cancelled. Eagle Creek Hike
DESCRIPTION:For those not going on the backpacking trip on Saturday that still want to get out and be active\, there is a hiking trip planned for Eagle Creek in the Columbia river gorge for Saturday June 21. We will need at least another leader (and one female leader to attend who can hike with us if any of the female scouts want to attend). The plan is to go as far as we can up the trail\, ideally to Tunnel Falls at the 6 mile mark\, and then turn around. Eagle Creek is an iconic gorge hike with stunning waterfalls and impressive\, picturesque views. \nScouts will need proper footwear for a rough and at times rocky trailbed\, 10 essentials including raingear\, snacks and lunch. If a scout is working on the Cooking Merit badge and wants to cook a hot lunch\, it would certainly be welcomed.\nThere are points on this hike with a path next to cliffs (with a handrail to hold onto)\, so those with vertigo or a severe fear of heights may want to forgo this experience.\nWe will meet at Murray Hills Christian Church and return to the same spot for dropoff.\nThe current fires in the gorge are much further down the gorge 30-40 miles away and the prevailing winds have so far kept the smoke heading east.\n

SUMMARY:Ape Caves Adventure (Updated/Still happening)
DESCRIPTION:UPDATE 10/7/2025\n***This event is still scheduled to happen. Many sites are closed with the government shutdown\, but one of our adult leaders verified that the Ape Caves site is being staffed by volunteers and is still open. We will still plan to depart per the below schedule. If for any reason when we arrive the site is closed\, we will redirect 15 minutes by car to June Lake for a 3 mile round trip hike.****\n\nWe will plan to meet at 7:45am at the old Basics Market parking lot\, with an 8:15 departure. 17675 SW Farmington Rd\, Aloha\, OR 97007\nEstimated return time is 4pm to the same location as the departure.\nRSVPs Required. If you do not RSVP\, we may not have adequate space to transport you.\n**DRIVERS** You will need a timed entry permit from Recreation.gov for the 11am time slot. these are $2 and have to be reserved by the driver of the vehicle. You will also need a NW Forest Adventure Day/Annual pass for your vehicle.\nThe scouts have expressed interest in an adventure through the Ape Caves\, and the Hillsboro SD\, Tigard-Tualatin and Beaverton SD Calendars coincided to allow an adventure on a Friday. To pull this off\, we will need 3-4 adults able to drive and meander through the cave experience (or wait at the entrance). Each car/driver will be required to purchase their own pass at Recreation.gov for the entrance time so we need adults to commit now. First come first serve for scouts as cars fill. Please comment below if you can drive on how many passengers you can take.\nThe Ape Caves are a unique adventure\, and the scouts will be taking the more adventurous route through the upper cave which requires some scrambling across large rock piles and some loose rocks. There may be a group wanting to explore the lower cave (easier route) as well. The cave is absolutely dark and 42 degrees year round\, so dress appropriately. Plan for an approximately 3 mile long hike\, with small diversion to the Trail of 2 Forests to crawl through a lava cast of a tree trunk before Ape Caves.\nWhat each Scout will need:\nSack lunch and snacks\nWater\n2-3 light sources (phones do not count)\nSmall backpack\nSturdy shoes/hiking boots with good traction\n\n

SUMMARY:Oregon Food Bank Repack Event
DESCRIPTION:Troop 870 will be volunteering at the Oregon Food Bank Facility in Beaverton doing a repack/food sorting project. We have signed up for 20 spots for this event\, so signup early if you want to attend. This is an age 10 and over event\, so unfortunately younger siblings cannot attend.\nThe project depends on the needs of the Oregon Food Bank Network. Volunteer shifts can include multiple projects. Depending on the project\, volunteers might work in a refrigerated space. The room temperature is 40-50 degrees in those refrigerated spaces. To keep hands warm we provide liners for the food-safe gloves. The shift might entail one or more of the following tasks:\n\n\nSort canned and boxed food donations into categories\nRepack and label bulk food items into family-size portions\nCull and sort produce\nThe length of a shift is directly related to the amount of food we receive. The end time is the latest the shift will go\, but may end earlier.\nWe processes common food allergens and due to food availability and the needs of our Network can change what we repack in any shift at the last minute. Latex allergy need not worry; our food safety gear is vinyl.\nTemperature in Food Repack/Sort shifts:\nBeaverton: volunteers will need to be prepared to be in a cold room kept at 50 degrees.\nPortland: volunteers should be prepared for a potentially cool warehouse setting; not in the cold room.\n

SUMMARY:Troop 870 Butte Creek Horse Ride and Campout
DESCRIPTION:Howdy Pardners\,\nOur fall Butte Creek campout and horse ride is coming up in a few weeks. I'm excited about this trip; I think we'll have an awesome time. I'll attach a roster of folks who've signed up. You can call or text me (Lorraine) at 971-401-2647 if you have questions.\nHere's the overall plan:\nWe'll meet at MHCC at 4:30 PM Friday night\, November 7th\, and head to the Ranch by 5 PM. Folks should eat supper at home or bring along a sack supper. Patrols will have Cracker Barrels on Friday night. We will be camping in the Mini Adirondacks at the back of the program field. The sites are Yellow Rose and Happy River. Each MiniDac has bunks for two people. If you'd like to set up a tent\, you're more than welcome to do so. The bunks in the Adirondacks are hard\, so I recommend bringing a pad to put under your sleeping bag.\n\nOn Friday night we'll set up camp. We will have a campfire both Friday night and Saturday night.\n\nOn Saturday we get up early\, cook our breakfasts\, clean up\, and make our lunches if we're on the full day ride. Then we'll head to the barn\, have our orientation\, and get on our horses and ride. We'll have an awesome ride no matter the weather\, just Be Prepared. People on the half day ride will make and eat their lunches when they come back to camp after their ride.\n\n\nSome people are coming to camp and not ride. This gives a great opportunity to work on Scout skills\, hike\, do lashing projects\, or GO FISHING. There are fish in the pond that are there to be caught\, cooked\, and eaten. If you want to fish\, bring your fishing gear.\n\nWe cook our meals in patrols. On Sunday morning\, the patrols make a good breakfast\, clean up and pack up. We hope to be able to do a service project Sunday morning. The ranger will let us know what our service project will be. We'll have Cowboy Church Sunday morning before we load up and head back to town. We will return to the parking lot at the old Basics Market in Aloha. (17675 SW Farmington Road) We usually get back about 1:30 or so.\nPlease make sure you are prepared. Bring your 10 essentials\, including your Scout Book. You should be prepared for rain. I recommend bringing a change of clothes just in case you get wet or muddy. Bring a warm coat; gloves can be great; long johns can keep you warm if the weather is cool\, and I recommend a hat.\nLorraine\nHere's the current roster:\nHALF DAY RIDE AND CAMPING: $ 75\n1. The scouting skills will build to a troop vs troop competition in the afternoon. This campout will be with many other troops from Pacific Trail and provide opportunities to meet other scouts and interact to see how their units function and bring fun ideas back to our troop. This will be a tent camping only experience\, with the troop cooking our own meals by patrol.Cost for this event for RSVPs by Sunday April 19th will be $65/attendee. Late registrations will increase to $70/attendee.We need to get registered Sunday April 19th to get discounted registration fees. Registration after this time will increase your cost by $5/person. We will register on Sunday for those RVPD as "Yes" for the event. $20 cancellation fee will apply if you need to cancel after RSVPing yes\, as that is what the troop must pay to the council and they are not offering refunds.Friday Departure: Murray Hills Christian church. Meet at 4:30PM and depart as soon as possible.Sunday pickup: 12pm at the new Wilco Farm Store 17675 SW Farmington Rd\, Aloha\, OR 97007

SUMMARY:Flag Ceremony at Retirement home
DESCRIPTION:The troop has been requested to perform a flag ceremony at a retirement home in Tualatin on Veterans Day to start and end their ceremony honoring the veterans amongst the residents. We won't need a large presence from the troop\, but 5-7 would be a good showing. We will post the colors\, offer a prayer\, and then wait for 30-40 minutes while the retirement home performs their ceremony to honor the veterans\, and then retrieve the colors.\nAll attendees will need to be in full uniform- Class A (clean and preferably pressed/ironed) with neckerchief\, scout pants\, belt and socks.\nPlease plan to be onsite by 10:45 am so we can review who is calling\, posting the colors and offering a prayer for the audience. \nPlease RSVP if you can attend. If anyone needs a ride from near the church\, Mr. Baxter will be attending and taking Finn\, so we can offer a ride to a few scouts if you are nearby.\n

Wilco Parking LotCOST:Full Day Ride w/ Camp: $120Half Day Ride w/ Camp: $75Camping Only: $30Howdy Pardners\, Our spring Butte Creek campout and horse ride is coming up in a few weeks. I'm excited about this trip; I think we'll have an awesome time. I'll attach a roster of folks who've signed up. You can call or text me at 971-401-2647 or we can talk at the troop meetings. Here's the overall plan:We'll meet at MHCC at 4:30 PM Friday night\, April 17th\, and head to the Ranch by 5 PM. The bunks in the Adirondacks are hard\, so I recommend bringing a pad to put under your sleeping bag.On Friday night we'll set up camp. We will have a campfire both Friday night and Saturday night. On Saturday we get up early\, cook our breakfasts\, clean up\, and make our lunches if we're on the full day ride. Then we'll head to the barn\, have our orientation\, and get on our horses and ride. We'll have an awesome ride no matter the weather\, just Be Prepared. People on the half day ride will make and eat their lunches when they come back to camp after their ride. Some people are coming to camp and not ride. This gives a great opportunity to work on Scout skills\, hike\, do lashing projects\, or GO FISHING. There are fish in the pond that are there to be caught\, cooked\, and eaten. If you want to fish\, bring your fishing gear.We cook our meals in patrols. It's now the location of Wilco. (17675 SW Farmington Road) We usually get back about 1 PM or so.Please make sure you are prepared. Bring your 10 essentials\, including your Scout Book. You should be prepared for rain. I recommend bringing a change of clothes just in case you get wet or muddy. Bring a warm coat; gloves can be great; long johns can keep you warm if the weather is cool\, and I recommend a hat.
