SUMMARY:Spring Camping Trip
DESCRIPTION:***UPDATE 5/5*** We must receive your RSVP and Venmo by 5pm on Wednesday\, May 7th in order to have a headcount for food purchasing. Any responses after that time cannot be guaranteed. Camping fee is $15 PER FAMILY (not per person). Please click here for a link to camping gear list.\nPack 255 campers! It's almost time for our spring pack camping trip\, so get those tents and sleeping bags ready.\nWe'll be heading to Cedarville State Forest from Friday\, May 9th to Sunday\, May 11th. We realize this presents a challenge for some families by falling on Mother's Day\, but to all our pack moms\, remember that it also offers the option to have your Mother's Day breakfast cooked for you if you come or to wake up to a calm and quiet house if the rest of the family comes without you. Also please note\, the pack will be providing Saturday dinner\, S'Mores\, and Sunday breakfast\, so if you plan to come Friday\, you'll need to bring your own food for the rest of the meals.\nPlease RSVP in Scoutbook and Venmo $15 to @cubscoutpack255 as soon as possible so we can get accurate headcount for food planning. (Menu to follow\, please let us know if you have any dietary restrictions.)\nIf you have any questions\, concerns\, or want to volunteer in advance to be on meal planning/cooking duty\, please contact Cubmaster Joe Longa (joseph.longa@gmail.com) or Camping Coordinator Chris DeBatt (cmdebatt@gmail.com). See you there!\n

SUMMARY:Raingutter Regatta
DESCRIPTION:Hey sailor! Calling all Pack 255 yachters! It's time for our annual Raingutter Regatta\, your Scout's chance to huff and puff their way to glory across 10 feet of watery track. This is our signature fall event\, a chance for your Scout to showcase their creativity and flair as they construct and decorate their Raingutter Regatta boat\, and earn their den's Race Time elective adventure.\nThe event will feature heats for each den to compete for first-\, second-\, and third-place medals\, followed by pack heats where each den's first- and second-place finishers compete for top-3 medalist honors. There will also be a design competition open to all non-medalists (to spread the love) with judges awarding 10 ribbons for the following design categories: Most Scout Spirit\, Most Patriotic\, Most Colorful\, Speediest Appearance\, Most Intimidating\, Most Scout-Built (i.e. no help from parents)\, Scouts' Choice (we'll have the entire pack vote!)\, plus 3 Captain's Choice picks for the judges to reward awesome boats that don't fall into any set category.\nSince this is one of our two pack competitive race events\, and since not every Scout will win a medal or ribbon\, this offers a great opportunity to start teaching our Scouts about good sportsmanship. To that end\, as part of the Race Time elective adventure\, your den leaders will have some allotted time to discuss how Scouts can deal with the agony and the ecstasy of winning and losing\, but we also encourage parents to reinforce this message in the days leading up to the event to help our Scouts understand that the Cub Scout motto\, "Do Your Best" means it's OK to lose while still cheering on our friends\, and hopefully avoid any race day meltdowns.\nPlease plan to show up to the church playground 15 minutes early if possible to ensure we have enough time to sign every Scout in and create the race heat brackets for an on-time start. We'll also need some parent volunteers to help with setup and clean-up\, and to serve as finish line judges and design award judges. Please sign up for a volunteer slot on our Signup Genius! \nEvent Agenda:\n1:00-2:00pm: Setup by parent volunteers\n1:45-2:00pm: Scout check-in\n2:00-2:30pm: Den sportsmanship meetings and open track practice for younger Scouts\, bracket building by race commissioners\n2:30-3:30pm: Den heats\, starting with Arrow of Light and progressing younger\, so new Scouts can see races in action before their turn\n3:30-4:00pm: Pack heats\, design judging\, and awards presentation\n4:00-4:30pm: Clean-up by parent volunteers\nUniform: Class A\n

SUMMARY:Scouting for Food (canvassing)
DESCRIPTION:Pack 255 community members! With Thanksgiving and the holiday season approaching\, Scouting America is kicking off its annual community service project to help local food banks\, Scouting for Food. Last year our pack collected hundreds of pounds of non-perishable items for this meaningful effort\, and we're looking to make this year an even bigger success\, with your help.\nPlease take some time on Saturday\, Nov. 1 to canvass your neighborhood\, letting people know your Scout(s) will be collecting food donations on Saturday\, Nov. 8 to contribute to the Manna Food Center\, serving the Montgomery County area.\nThe pack will provide stickers you can leave on doors\, and it's recommended you leave a paper grocery bag if you have one. Other best practices from past years' efforts include going door to door with your Cub Scout(s) in full class A uniform (who can resist a kid in uniform!) and writing a personalized letter instead of the stickers.\nA separate calendar invite will have details on food donation drop-off. SUMMARY:Pinewood Derby
DESCRIPTION:Pack 255 racers\, start your engines! It's time for our annual Pinewood Derby\, where Scouts get to show off the race car they designed and built for speed and appearance. We'll run a series of heats for each den\, identifying first/second/third place finishers for each\, followed by a pack-wide heat for the top two finishers from each den to crown the first/second/third place finishers in the pack. We'll also hand out 10 design awards in the following categories: [TBD]Please note\, unlike the Raingutter Regatta where the Scouts have to propel their own craft\, the Pinewood Derby relies solely on gravity. This means that even if your Scout can't be present on race day\, we are able to include their car in their den heats while maintaining a fair competition (as well as their eligibility for the design competition)\, so if you know your Scout won't be present please encourage them to construct a car anyway!Also\, the first place finisher from each den will be eligible to compete in the Potomac District Pinewood Derby on Saturday\, May 2nd; information will be provided to those Scouts' families after the conclusion of our pack Pinewood Derby. Last year we sent a number of Scouts to represent the pack at the district race\, and we're hoping to do the same this year! Please show up a little early if possible so we can start the race heats beginning with Lion den promptly at 2pm. SUMMARY:Pinewood Derby car check-in (Session 1)
DESCRIPTION:Pack 255 racers! In order for your car to participate in our Pinewood Derby\, it must meet all regulations for weight and design specs (listed below). We've scheduled two car weigh-in/check-in sessions for Scouts to bring their car to be inspected\, weighed\, and checked in by den. You only need to attend one of these sessions\, but once your car is inspected and checked in\, we will keep it until race day to ensure no further modifications are made.Weight regulation: Your car cannot exceed 5.00g on our scale\, and yes it does go to two decimal places! If your car is over the limit\, we will not accept it for racing until you decrease the weight to meet the regulation.Undercarriage: The bottom of your car must remain flush with the original bottom of the wood block\, or it won't run correctly on our track. This means you cannot attach anything to the underside of the car (e.g. no gluing on coins/washers\, no screwing in metal bits). If you choose to hollow out the bottom to insert a heavier material inside\, make sure you secure it properly (e.g. no duct tape\, we've seen it fail!) so nothing falls out or protrudes beyond the bottom of the wood block. If your car does not meet this specification\, we will not accept it for racing. For full rules and regulations regarding design specs\, please refer to the NCAC Potomac District Pinewood Derby rules. Since our den winners will be eligible for the Potomac District race\, we strongly advise adhering to these rules to ensure your car will meet qualifications at the district race. Please contact Cubmaster Joe Longa or post in the WhatsApp General Conversation group with any questions about Pinewood Derby design regulations. SUMMARY:Spring Recruiting Picnic
DESCRIPTION:Pack 255 families! Please join us for our spring pack picnic\, which will pull double duty as both a fun outdoor unstructured play time for the kids and as a pack recruiting event for the parents. We'll take over a picnic grove in Rock Creek Park on a (hopefully) beautiful spring Sunday afternoon\, where you can bring some snacks\, balls\, frisbees\, cornhole\, whatever will keep the kiddos entertained so the adults can carry on a conversation! This event will have two topics of discussion\, so if you fall into one of these groups\, please try to join:Families with a rising kindergartener who might be interested in joining Lion den in fall 2026. This includes both current pack families with a younger sibling\, as well as any friends or neighbors you know! We'll discuss what to expect in Lion den\, and the benefits of having a current pack parent step up to become next year's Lion den leader. ***Please note\, we're only recruiting members for next year's Lion den. All other dens are bursting at the seams\, so barring a wave of attrition over the summer\, we're not looking for new Scouts at those grade levels.***Families interested in volunteering with the pack. Avid readers of our pack newsletter may have noticed we have several vacant leadership positions\, including assistant Cubmaster and committee secretary\, as well as impending vacancies for roles like Pinewood Derby commissioner. Our pack only survives because parents step up to help us make this pack a fun and welcoming group\, and the more adult volunteers we have\, the easier it becomes! No need to RSVP\, just show up to Rock Creek Picnic Grove #9 ready to have some fun and talk about how to keep this pack going strong. ***Please note\, since this is an official pack event\, even though it's a picnic\, we can't allow any adult beverages. Keep it La Croix-level until you get home.***
